Arsenal 1-0 Wigan: Nervy, But Important

And yes, it was indeed a very nervy finale to a game we absolutely deserved a win from, and we got it. Of course if you believed the commentators and nearly everyone else it was a win we were lucky to get and we should now be losing confidence from the substandard performance.

I don't think that could be farther from the truth. We dictated the play and had four or five clear-cut chances to score, one of which was taken quickly by Adebayor. He may have his rough days, but you can't deny his quality when he is presented with a simplest of goals as he was today. As long as he can at least do that he's as valuable a player as any in the squad.

Van Persie also had a good game today, but lacked a bit of sharpness, especially when he was played in brilliantly by Fabregas and contrived to miss it. Luckily it didn't end up costing us anything.

I didn't really see any other standout performers. Clichy and Fabregas were good as always, Sanga was excellent, Djourou did well to win balls in the air (the next Senderos when he was in form maybe?), and overall the team played well.

The only disappointing aspects of the game were obviously that we didn't score more, but also we started to panic in the last 20 minutes defensively. We weren't awful as the commentators would have you believe, but we were a bit nervy and anxious. We weren't our usually calm selves and maybe that invited a bit more pressure from Wigan.

Oh, and Eboue was awful. Whilst I don't necessarily agree with the incessant booing of him and cheers that took place when he was substituted, I think he did play awful. He has never been that good for us anyway, and coming back from injury today he was even worse; one time passing the ball right to Wigan which led to a decent chance on goal, and then the next time stripping Toure of the ball and delivering a brilliant pass right back to Wigan. Yes he was out of position but he was awful today and I only hope he can return to whatever form he calls his best quickly.

But all in all, a satisfying win. It may not have been a vintage performance, but in the end all that matters is the three points, and that's exactly what we got today. So well done lads, now on to the Champions League in midweek where we will look to end our group play with a bang in Portugal, already being through. I'll preview that closer to the match, and I'll also be re posting one of our most popular articles to date in the next few days: one that takes tactical look at our style of play verses the Invincibles'. Should be interesting; until then,

  1. its a joke! booing our player. the only reason arsenal were shaky was because some arsenal fans are weak. when a corner or free kicks are taken they sing up until the player is about to kick the ball then stop. they have no belief. so they worry whats gonna happen next. the fans are killing the players morale.you could take enemy fans disrespecting but your own so called family. it takes the piss. are people stupid . we know arsene protects his players like there his sons so how would that make him feel. do people think he has no friends in the changing.how would it make us feel if our friend was being booed . im telling you now forget being loyal to unloyal fans i wouldnt want put my all in for those bunch of pricks.SO EXPECT LOEWR PERFORMANCES. eboue was there watching the kids in the carling cup supporting arsenals future. he knows what support means. where was van persie. how many mistakes does he make. after today. i swear i hope arsene leaves. then fabregas. then all the other important players, because those fans dont deserve winning anything. barcelona ,madrid does things like booing and treating players like robots and meat, but they have won the european cup and its still wrong. some fans know what it takes to be a footballer but couldnt do it. eboue started making more mistakes because the crowd killed him. no player on that pitch played perfect passes. arsenals fans are now doing the work for our enemies. deluded bunch of d***s. ive never seen that happen to an arsenal player. forget that win its been ruined . when them players went into the changing rooms they probably spent time trying to gee up eboue instead of celebrating the victory.cesc has already gestured to the crowd because the fans are trying to kill him and his friends. weak minded fans, media with an agenda, the premier league with their selected teams (not arsenal). ITS NOT ARSENE OR THE PLAYERS ITS THE WEAK ANd ENVIOUS THAT ARE dESTROYING SOMETHING THAT CAN BE BEAUTIFUL ANd WE WOULd AS FANS ENJOY IT. wenger is not stubborn he has faith thats why he is successful and these fickle fans leave the match and go back to there shit lives. these guys are young. your trying to destroy there lives.

  2. I'm disappointed u are taking the view of such other Arsenal supporters and saying Eboue played badly. In fact u just mentioned all the bad things he did that he was booed for.

  3. These morons should be ashamed, what kind of an idiot boos his own player? How the fuck does this help the team?? These people aren't true supporters or even casual fans they are parasites who are only here for the glory. No one booed Hillier, Morrow, McGoldrick or Selley during the 90s, though I doubt anyone booing today would even know who I'm talking about. True gooners need to shame these people - what the hell must the likes of Fabregas be thinking hearing these idiots booing one of his own team mates? I wouldn't blame him if he decided to clear off back to spain - why on earth would you want to play for such morons?

  4. Well Brain, I really did think Eboue was bad. He was out of position and that added to it, but his passes were off all night, he never got into the attack and then in the second half he started making the mistakes. So yes, he was bad tonight.

HOWEVER, I agree with everyone here that the booing was out of line. I don't approve of it one bit, after all we fans are here to support the players and the team, not jeer them when they make mistakes. Eboue WAS bad, but I am truly discusted by the "fans" who felt they had to jeer him off the park. It was despicable. If a player is bad say it to your mates after the game, don't boo you own players; it's idiotic.

  5. WHY NOT START A POST WHERE TRUE GOONERS CAN SEND A MESSAGE OF SUPPORT TO EBOUE AND LET HIM (AND JUST AS IMPORTANTLY THE OTHER PLAYERS) KNOW THAT WE ARE NOT ALL MINDLESS MORONS AND THAT WE DO ACTUALLY SUPPORT THE TEAM. YOU COULD THEN PRINT IT OUT AND SEND TO THE CLUB WHO COULD PASS IT ON TO EBOUE. I WOULDN'T BLAME HIM, OR ANY OTHER PLAYERS, IF THEY NEVER FELT LIKE PLAYING FOR THE ARSENAL AGAIN IF IT MEANS BEING ABUSED BY THESE PRAWN SANDWICH MUNCHERS. I USED TO BE SO PROUD OF ARSENAL FANS COMPARED TO THE BEHAVIOUR OF OTHERS, BUT NOW LOOK WHAT IS HAPPENING AT OUR GROUND. WE NEED TO REDEEM OURSELVES AND SENDING MESSAGES OF SUPPORT WOULD BE A GREAT WAY OF DOING THIS AND RESTORING CONFIDENCE. TRUE GOONERS NEED TO STAND UP AND TAKE BACK OUR CLUB.
