Thoughts On the 4-3-3

It was a fantastic result against Celtic Tuesday night, and now we approach the first home game of the season this weekend as we host Portsmouth. So before we start looking ahead to Pompey, I thought it might be appropriate to take a closer look at our new 4-3-3 formation and its effectiveness thus far.

Obviously we've gotten two fantastic results from the new formation, but it's worked for a bit longer than that. We first saw the formation in pre-season, and since its implementation we have only one result other than a win, and that was the 2-0 reverse in Valencia. Otherwise, it has overcome Hamburg & Celtic, won us the Emirates Cup, and swept aside a usually difficult Everton. One cannot honestly say it doesn't work. But what is making it work so well?

It seems to be that the reason behind its success is twofold. Firstly, it's the best fit for the players we have. We discovered last season that having only one defensive player and one creative player in centre midfield was no longer strong enough without Flamini. Denilson, as good as the stats showed he was, could not slot in next to Fabregas very effectively. Denilson tends to want to attack, and he doesn't quite have the same presence of body to shield the back four as much as is required.

But now with the 4-3-3 we have three players across the centre of midfield; usually Denilson, Song, and Fabregas. In this formation, Fabregas tends to be the farthest forward, joining the front three in attack and linking the play up. Denilson on the left side of the three can also venture forward, but not quite as much as Fabregas. He tends to move play along nicely, but also get back and defend when we're not in possession. When that happens, the formation then includes effectively two defensive midfielders.

With two players to assist the back four, there is naturally a much better shield in place against opposition attacks, but it wouldn't work without both defensive midfielders being accurate in their tackling and not giving away too many fouls. So far in this respect, Alex Song has been a revelation in the first two competitive matches of the season. He's been strong in the tackle, imposing himself physically, and really does look the part. And regular readers of the blog will know I predicted this one; I knew that Song had what it took to play the role of DM effectively, and with the new 4-3-3 he has been able to show his worth.

So then, the first key to the success of the new formation has been players in better and more effective positions on the pitch. The second reason behind it's success has been more effective defending. And there is nothing that I have seen that has added to our improved defending as much as the pressing game we are now employing.

Tony Mowbray pointed it out in his interviews before the game at Celtic Park, and when asked about it, Arsene Wenger slyly said he didn't want to talk about tactics. That pretty much confirmed that what Mowbray had noticed was true. Arsenal had been working on a new pressing defensive style and had slowly implemented it this pre-season.

And it was clear from the Celtic match what an effect this pressing has. Our players from strikers back were pressuring the player in possession of the ball, forcing him to make mistakes or pass it astray. And if he ventured close enough to the Arsenal man, he was likely to lose possession and be caught out of position as Arsenal broke.

It was remarkably effective at Celtic, who, unlike Everton, were playing with a very physical and aggressive style. Exactly the kind of style that has given us so many problems over the last few years. The way in which we fought back, pressured and won the ball, and dominated the game against such a physical style is hugely encouraging and shows that we may have finally learnt how to handle such teams.

Overall the 4-3-3 has thus far been a success. However, let's not get too carried away. It still has yet to be tested against the very top opposition, but in a week and a half we will have just that test as we visit Old Trafford. It is then that we will find out just how effective or ineffective this new formation really is. But for now, it's working wonders; and I'm hoping it will continue.

  1. This is a terrific article. Good observation about the extra pressure we're applying in the middle third of the pitch.

    Well done Fab4.

  3. I didn't read your article, sorry, because the formation is 4-2-3-1, a common mistake but a fatal one, I have seen many commentators talk about it being 4-3-3 but they're simply wrong.

    almunia

    Sagna, Gallas, Verlmaelen, clichy

    denilson, song

    b-52, fabregas, arshavin

    Van persie

Both matches so far those have been this formation, as shown pre match.

I know it's ignorant of me to comment on an article I haven't read but it's based on the wrong assumption of our formation, the two DM roles filled by song and denilson have allowed our centre backs to attack more as Song easily fills in for either gallas or Vermalen, I was surprized by how brazen both CB's were in getting forward and it worked well.

  4. Well see, I think you're a bit wrong there. The formation is indeed a 4-3-3, but it has an element of fluidity that I think you're confusing for a 4-2-3-1. The formation primarily looks like this:

    Almunia
    Sanga-Gallas-Vermaelen-Clichy
    Fabregas-Song-Denilson
    Bendtner-RVP-Arshavin

But thanks to the fluidity and changing positions as we transition from attack to defense and back again, the formation can look a bit like you described. That's because Cesc is pushing forward like I mentioned and Bendtner & Arshavin are dropping back to become more traditional wingers in order to provide cover for our fullbacks.

So yes, the formation is still a 4-3-3, but it does have an element of fluidity which sometimes makes it a 4-2-3-1. However, for all intents and purposes, it's still a 4-3-3, so I stand by my calling it that.

    Thanks for the comment mate.

  5. the fact that we are pressing very high up the pitch and usually winning the ball when our backline is on halfway also contributes to the myth that cesc is playing as close to a second striker.
obv im a diff anonymous to the previous one.

  7. Fab 4. I enjoyed your article and love the gunners new look.
I feel that we lack depth especially if we have injuries like we do now. Our bench as is now lacks a lot.. I think eboue is more fit for a dm isn't that his normal position? I hope diaby nasri rosisky and walcott get fit soon. When they get back I think our team will have a good bench and a far better team because of it.

B-52 still has to get in terms with the league in terms of finishing. His physique and height is impressive but his finishing is still off the mark. Once he gets atleast half as prolific as someone like eduardo then i would back him to lead the 3 pronged attack with RVP moving to his natural left wing position making way for arshavin to come on the right. This would aid good aerial play. As for Song the forums observations are spot on. He is a natural CB and a coupla seasons at the midfield makes him an ideal DM and he does fit into the 4-3-3 scheme.

  9. You've rightly pointed out how this formation shores up our defence and works with a pressing game.

However, for once, I think Myles also has a point. The test of this formation will be whether it gets our 3 talented forwards time on the ball in dangerous positions. 6 goals at Everton, only 1 scored by a striker - and that was Eduardo coming on as a sub. 2 goals at Celtic, but for all our domination we needed a deflection and an OG.

In all the celebrations we shouldn't ignore that our first-choice forward line are yet to score.

I think Arshavin and B-52 are not yet being used to their best advantage, and with a player as talented as Arshavin that's almost a crime.

This could all change at Portsmouth of course, and it might just be a case of bedding things in.

  10. ARSENAL WILL TEAR POMPY UP INTO BITS YOU JUST WAIT AND SEE I THINK ARSENE HAS SEEN TIME N TIME THAT UNITED HAVE WON THE LEAGUES BECAUSE OF THE GOAL DIFFERENCES SO WE ARE SCORING ALOT OF GOALS ASWELL ALTHOUGH LAST SEASON UNITED SCORED 67-69 AND WE SCORED 64 I THINK IM IF NOT WRONG, BUT FORMATIONS LOOKING GOOD BUT I THINK ARSENE WILL CHANGE IT TO A 4-5-1 DURING BIG GAMES LIKE UNITED NXT WEEK, THE BOYS PLAYED SUPERB ON TUESDAY NIGHT VERMAELEN, GALLAS AN SONG MEN OF THE MATCH EVERY1 ELSE PLAYED SUPERB ASWELL TOMORROWS SCORELINE-- ARSENAL 4-1 PORTSMOUTH

  11. I think you are right about the 4-3-3 more or less. I watched all the arsenal games last season as they preferred the 4-2-3-1 and it was definitely nothing like what we see now.

the trick is indeed that the wide midfielders push forward forming a triangle to the midfield and only drop back to form a protective line if their pressing game fails in the first two thirds of the pitch.

and what comes to the wide strikers I suppose that what I saw during the emirates cup and the first 2 games their work areas are split for left and right sides offencively so they can swap with the center striker if he strays towards edge or closer to midfield. also they mainly defend against the fullbacks but arshavin for example didnt come down the side too much in the celtic game as denilson ran a lot forth and back on his side... whereas fabregas only came to help when needed as bendtner helped out sagna a lot more to get balls back.
