We Don't Need a New Midfielder

Finally, after the long summer wait, this Saturday football will be back. Arsenal football that is, and it's an exciting time if you're a gooner. We've already made one big signing this summer, and it was in the position that many of us were crying for Arsene to improve: central defense. So with that transfer out of the way, I believe that we are one signing away from mounting a major challenge on all fronts next season.

The general consensus seems to be that we need a central midfielder to partner Cesc in the centre of the park. We need a dominating defensive-minded player who will do the dirty work in the centre of the pitch winning the ball back and launching our attacks forward. And if possible, perhaps this midfielder ought to be tall to give us an extra aerial threat and give us some added defensive solidity defending corners and set pieces.

But with pre-season about to be underway, and most of our players having already returned to training, we have yet to see that big arrival. So I pose the question, what if we don't sign a new midfielder?

Here's the answer: it doesn't matter.

It doesn't matter because we already have the player described above. And although a new signing would undoubtedly be the best thing we could get, what if we don't? What then? Then it will be time to say hello to who I believe should partner Fabregas in CM next season: Alexandre Song.

Alex Song had a disastrous start to his Arsenal career, and for the few seasons after that it really didn't look like he would make it at this football club. But then came last season, the season where I believe our young players finally grew up and gained the experience they need to be top class footballers and true title contenders; and Song was one of them.

In the latter half of last season Song started partnering Denilson in central midfield. This was before Cesc returned from injury, and at the time perhaps few noticed the effect it was having. With Song next to him, Denilson was able to get forward more and attack as he has always been accustomed to doing. And with Arshavin, Walcott, and Eduardo also returning, it got us back in form.

Then Fabregas at last returned, and Arsene Wenger had to make a choice: should Denilson partner Fabregas in midfield has he had done earlier in the season, or, considering our newfound defensive-mindedness, should Song partner Cesc? The decision made by Le Boss was to have Song partner Fabregas, and Denilson was left to the bench for the final month or so of the season.

And when Fabregas returned, we all noted how his form had drastically improved. He was attacking more, racking up the assists, and looking like the Cesc of old. But it wasn't just the long layoff that improved his form. For the first time in the season, he had a strong, dominating defensive midfielder behind him who was doing the work of cleaning up and winning the ball back; this player was Alex Song.

One need only look at his performance against Manchester United in both the League and Champions League to see the improvement in the Cameroonian midfielder. He was doing all the work that Flamini used to do, he looked solid, and most importantly his passing when he won the ball back was excellent.

If we don't sign a new defensive midfielder during this transfer window, I don't believe it will be the end of the world or a major inhibitor to a title push. Because we already have just the man we need for the job, and that man is Alexandre Song. I believe he should partner Fabregas in midfield next season, because, in a manner epitomising Arsene Wenger's youth plan, he has grown into the long-term replacement for both Flamini and Viera.

A fantastic post and you are spot on, Alex Song really is good enough and i think plenty of fans are too insistant on a new signing for the sake of it. I dont feel we NEED a defensive midfielder, so why pay £20m + to hinder the career of an ever growing Alex Song.

  2. I would rather play Denilson than Song. Without Denilson we got thrashed 3-1 against United and 4-1 against Chelsea,, how shame is that !

But still,, we need at least one more experienced midfielder. I'm hoping Wenger to sign Cana / Veloso / Hitzlsperger this summer !

  3. I like Song, but it's not realistic to expect him to play game after game.Plus we are desperate for a leader in midfield. Why don't we take Vieira back and use him in when we need some more experience?

  4. you can't play a player like song game in game out. and are you kidding me? currently liverpool pairs mascherano and alonso. cesc and song?

as liverpool and the rest of the prem league, i'm very threatened. yeah right.

song is a decent player, don't get me wrong, but he's not near the top of the batch and he never will be, mark my words. the boy has shown a lack of fitness near the end of games and constantly plays horizontal, there is so much to improve in his game, i personally think he will never become more than you're average holder. you're all more than welcome to deny my beliefs though.

  5. Fabs form wasn't that good when he came back, he was lost against liverpool, gave the ball away every single time, had no awareness. Same with the chelsea game and Man u

Dude Flamini could see danger early like Mascherano.Remember how all flaminis goals were struck first time, his thinking and football brain were that fast. Song sees it too late recovers wins the tackle looks like a hero ah..I'dont think so
He won't ever be great. You can't teach this. Denilson has it but is not strong enough yet.

  7. Song for me doesn't have a big enough engine (yet) to truely tie down the DM spot and I think Arsene Wenger sees his future lying more in defence - bearing in mind Gallas and/or Toure are unlikely to both be here at the end of next season.

  8. Song, Denilson, Diaby won't magically transform into a dominating force we can ever win the league with. Go back to hogwarts you morons and take your wands so you can play with yourselves.

  10. need a balance of attackin minded and defensive minded midfielfers i reckon. atm we got too many atackin minded midfielders in fabregas, denilson, diaby and ramsey. where as in defensive minded mids, we hav only got song, djorou and toure maybe, and after them are 17yo coquelin and frimpong. so i would definitely not mind a more defensive minded recruit. would balance things out perfectly, making a solid 25 to 26 man squad to last an entire season

    eduardo bendtner

and 3 to 4 young prospects in vela, ramsey, diaby and wilshere. perfect! with players who are versatile as well, would b able to cover most areas of the pitch. so wenger pplease!!! just one more!!!!

  15. Cesc knows we need a dm, maybe chamahk can play dm? He's definitely better than what we have.

  16. you cleverly left out any countering evidence of the cesc-song partnership that was showcased against man u in the champions league. personally, i think djourou would be just as good - if not better - operating there. i also think the adebayor cash would be more useful bringing in van der vaart or sneijder (pushing walcott into a full on attacking role) than chamahk or huntelaar.

Sounds like Arsenal quality to me, put him in Wenger!

  18. HONESTLY Y NOT KOLO TOURE?!!song is a better defender than toure and toure has better ball control in comparison to song n song seems to be calmer at the back.plus song n gallas arent at odds with each other!toure is not as tall and he is quicker and better at making forward runs into the box like vieira used to do

  19. I agree with some of the comments. Song is a good squad player. He isn't aggressive enough, nor powerful enough. Not imposing. And absolutely agree with the comment that his reading of the game is not good enough.

I think Denilson has greater potential. But he really needs to bulk up. He looks like a boy out there.
